It changed my life!
Twenty years on I remember this book well. I read it in the early eighties. The word pictures the book painted of previously happy people madly desiring encyclopaedias; and happy haitian locals relaxing on the beach while northerners slaved away working has been with me ever since. I remember reading sections twice because it was such an eye opener to me. I had never heard of cargo culture before. A great read. Every shopaholic should read it! For me it was like discovering body language or seeing myself in a mirror for the first time. Never again would I be taken for a ride by a salesman. Now that I have nothing I am happy and I understand why. Highly recommended. Thanks Eugene.

Americans We

Author: Eugene Richards
Average review score:

richard's style is unique and unflinching.
richards is a unique photographer. in this day when journalistic photographs are only deemed publishable if they are simple and obvious, richards provides images that are strange and challanging to the viewer. while these are documentary images, they are very open-ended, allowing the viewer to decide what they mean to them. excellent selection of an excellent career.

visions of light
If I could give it more stars, I would. Here we have a rare treat; a dynamic duo, a tremendous twosome. Eugene Achet, who some call the father of modern photography and who is arguably the greatest photographer of all time is teamed up with John Sarkowski, certainly one of the greatest curators, editors, and writers about photography of all time. This 3 volume set is absolutely stunning. It's at the very least a must see, if not a must buy, for anyone who is seriously interested in photography. I had a photo prof. who said this book was more important than the Bible for an artist. I'm not exactly sure wether this is a more profound statement about the spiritual state of artists or the importance of this book, but it was cool either way. The works in this particular volume are mostly urban landscape/architecture. To the modern eye they may seem slightly banal, but we have to keep in mind here that the reason they seem slightly common is that Achet is the source. Anything that looks even vaugely like this work came from Achet. There are very few of these later works, however, that are done with such mastry of light and composition as is constant in Achet's work . That man, more than just about anyone else, knew how to have his head in the right place at the right time. The whole collection is exquisitely selected arranged by John Sarkowski. This volume, this whole set in fact, is a true treasure.

Applications of Environmental Chemistry: A Practical Guide for Environmental Professionals
Published in Hardcover by Lewis Publishers, Inc. (26 May, 2000)
Author: Eugene R. Weiner
Average review score:

"Must have" book
Dr. Weiner's guide on environmental chemistry is a "must have" for consulting engineers of almost any discipline if for no other reason than it is a quick read and a good reference that can help the practicing professional be an expert as well as sound like an expert.

I appreciate his presentation of principles and theories in simplified form so that, when necessary, I can think things through, based on fundamentals. His rules are just what a practicing consulting engineer needs when dealing with new problems in the field where quick estimates are needed.

It is obvious that Dr. Weiner has combined long years of experience as a chemistry professor from a good university with many years as an active water quality consultant, because he knows what professionals need to know and he knows how to explain it in a down-to-earth manner.

What also is evident is that Dr. Weiner served on the Colorado State Regulators Board because he is able to explain what regulators usually inquire about. His eight years on the Colorado Water Quality Commission paid off for all of us grateful readers!

In essence, Dr. Weiner has provided an easy-to-use book with a logical structure that makes it a handy resource. This book, though selling for nearly [...], will pay for itself many times over on your first water quality assignment. Thanks to the publishers for making it available.

Arthritis : An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide
Published in Paperback by Future Medicine Publishing, Inc. (15 January, 2000)
Authors: Eugene R. Zampieron, Ellen Kamhi, and Burton Goldberg
Average review score:

Arthritis
You don't have to accept the pain and disability of arthritis as an inevitable part of life. Alternative medicine offers proven "solutions for identifying and treating the underlying causes and can bring lasting relief to arthritis sufferers." That's the message offered by Eugene R. Zampieron, N.D., A.H.G., and Ellen Kamhi, Ph.D., R.N., H.N.C. in their new book, Arthritis: An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide.
Dr. Zampieron specializes in non-toxic treatment of arthritis and other rheumatological and autoimmune disorders. Dr. Kamhi is known as an authority on natural healing. Both doctors appear on radio and television shows, teach, and lead workshops.
Although more than 100 types of arthritis are known, the doctors focus on the three most common kinds: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. They also discuss gout, psoriatic arthritis, and infectious arthritis. More than 20 million Americans suffer from one or more of these diseases.
Conventional medicine offers numerous drugs to relieve arthritis. Generally those drugs simply relieve pain, without providing permanent help. Many of the drugs cause unpleasant side effects as well. Zampieron and Kamhi say that "Alternative medicine, on the other hand, offers a wide range of treatment options for eliminating the often hidden causes of arthritis." They add that "the primary keys are proper diet and nutrition, detoxification, and stress reduction."
The two doctors explain how to accomplish each of these in detail, including case histories of patients they have helped. They provide information on their "arthritis diet," complete with sample recipes. They also describe all the testing procedures for finding the causes of arthritis, and how to remove those causes. Detoxification plays a big role, and they explain how to do that. Stress reduction is covered in the mind-body section. They also include information on supplements, exercises, and physical therapy.
"Quick Definitions" are scattered throughout the book, so that readers can learn the meaning of any unknown words. Complete information is also given on contacting labs, healers, and providers of recommended services/supplies in the text.
While the emphasis is on reversing or alleviating arthritis after it's developed, the solutions suggested by Zampieron and Kamhi are equally effective in preventing the onset of arthritis. Arthritis provides essential information for every American who wishes to live a life free from the suffering of this preventable and correctable disease.

Assignment in Utopia
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (January, 1991)
Author: Eugene Lyons
Average review score:

Stalin's USSR the Way It Was
Eugene Lyons was a clever and amusing fellow. Assigned to be a reporter in Moscow during Stalin's rule he broke the mold: he, unlike Walter Duranty of the Times, would tell the truth. Initially attracted to the Great Experiment, Lyons soon learned the misery and death suffered by the eggs broken in Lenin's omelet: the NEP men slaughtered when the New Economic Policy fell from favor, the kulaks liquidated as a class, the Ukraine nearly exterminated. Though tragic, Lyons recounts the times with wit and pathos, and with a grasp of English not unlike a cross between Conrad and Nabakov.

Astral Man to Cosmic Christ: A Metaphysical Odyssey

An Ocult Page-Turner
I ordered this book yesterday and couldn't put it down until I finished. Definitely a classic in the occult fiction genre. The metaphorical explanations of significant ideas were a highlight...imagine human two cells talking to each other, one claiming to believe in this thing called man, the other a scientific disbeliever. If you like stories like the Nine Faces of Christ, get this one.

Atget: Life in Paris (Pocket Archives, 10)
Published in Paperback by Hazan Editeur (April, 1998)
Authors: Eugene Atget and Guillaume Le Gall
Average review score:

Valuable research on Paris at the turn of the century
This book is a fabulous addition to my research library. The photographs of vendors and their wares; storefronts and their dressing; and people living their lives on the streets of Paris are invaluable to me as an opera set dresser and propmaster. The photographs are, of course, beautiful in their own right; and the text is informative, poetic, and interesting.
